Music: I Love It

This section is devoted to music. It is one of the most important and meaningful things in my life. Although I am a rank amateur when it comes to making music, I have been listening to it for a long time.

In general, I prefer rock, electronic, dance, and related genres.

WMC Report - 07/10/2003 - 11:37 PM

Better late than never. Heather and I attended the Winter Music Conference in Miami in March. Man was that amazing, can't wait for next year (not that much longer now! haha)

High points were: Ultra 5, with Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Underworld, Paul Van Dyk, Sasha and John Digweed. Absolutely mindblowing. Also went to Dancevalley at Opium Garden, which was all Dutch DJ's, very cool.

Anyway, if you're into electronic music at all I highly recommend trying to attend the WMC in 2004. See you there!

Lyrics Spotlight - "Parabola" - 08/06/2002 - 02:53 PM

Since I am moved greatly by music, I'm going to have a little spot here to highlight song lyrics that find particularly moving or interesting.

"Parabola" by TOOL

We barely remember
Who or what came before this precious moment.
We are choosing to be here.
Right now.
Hold on...stay inside
this holy reality,
this holy experience.
Choosing to be here
in this body.
This body holding me.
Be my reminder here that I am not alone.
In this body.
This body holding me.
Feeling eternal,
all this pain is an illusion.
Alive.
In this holy reality.
This holy experience.
Choosing to be here
in this body.
This body holding me.
Be my reminder here that I am not alone.
In this body.
This body holding me.
Feeling eternal,
all this pain is an illusion.
Twirling 'round with this familiar parable.
Spinning, weaving 'round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift
and celebrate this chance to be
alive and breathing.
One chance to be alive and breathing.
This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment and remember:
We are eternal,
and all this pain is an illusion.

Lyrics Spotlight - "The Dead Flag Blues" - 09/24/2002 - 02:34 PM

"the dead flag blues" by Godspeed You Black Emperor

the car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel.
and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides.
and a dark wind blows.
the government is corrupt.
and we're on so many drugs
with the radio on and the curtains drawn.

we're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine,
and the machine is bleeding to death.

the sun has fallen down
and the billboards are all leering
and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles.

it went like this:

the buildings tumbled in on themselves.
mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble
and pulled out their hair.

the skyline was beautiful on fire.
all twisted metal stretching upwards.
everything washed in a thin orange haze.

i said: "kiss me, you're beautiful -- these are truly the last days."

you grabbed my hand and we fell into it like a daydream or a fever.

we woke up one morning and fell a little further down --
for sure it's the valley of death.

i open up my wallet and it's full of blood.

A Hundred Days Off - 07/20/2002 - 12:01 AM

The new Underworld CD, "A Hundred Days Off", is due to be released on September 16, 2002. However, thanks to the internet (and to soulseek.org), I've managed to get my paws on the full album in mp3 format. It is awesome. Of course.

The standout tracks on the first few listens are:

  • Two Months Off
  • Dinosaur Adventure 3D
  • Sola Sistim

Can't wait to catch these guys live again!

New Music Alert! - 07/19/2002 - 11:56 PM

I've recently been listening to a couple of great synthpop and industrial albums:

The first is "The Point at Which it Falls Apart" by Mesh. A really good, catchy album that sounds like Depeche Mode mixed with early Nine Inch Nails.

The second is Echo Image, a very poppy but catchy album that reminds me of Garbage. Check them out!

Third is VNV Nation, an industrial dance act that covers the range between clanging and banging industrial with trance-like, pounding dance tracks.

I recommend all three. Give them a listen!

Your H.P. Lovecraft Quote of the Moment:

Now, indeed, the essence of pure nightmare was upon me. Sanity departed - and, ignoring everything except the animal impulse of flight, I merely struggled and plunged upward over the incline's debris as if no gulf had existed. Then I saw the chasm's edge, leaped frenziedly with every ounce of strength I possessed, and was instantly engulfed in a pandaemoniae vortex of loathsome sound and utter, materially tangible blackness.
