Well, folks, I was one of the lucky ones who snagged the AP soundtrack before they recalled it. For those of you who don't know, there was apparently some kind of copyright mishap regarding the Huey Lewis & the News song, "Hip To Be Square." Now it won't be released until the 25th, which is a bit of a bummer for those who didn't catch it yet. On top of that, the original version has a "hidden" track-- Track 40 contains Patrick's thoughts on Whitney Houston (which in this case he is relating to Christie). Pretty damned hilarious, that-- I hope that at least makes it to the new version. :}

BTW, as I mentioned elsewhere on this site, I still think it's freaky that two songs are on both the AP soundtrack -and- the Bright Lights, Big City soundtrack (from 1988): "True Faith" (by New Order) and "Punp Up the Volume" (by M/A/R/R/S). Will the Ellis-McInerney connection ever die? I guess not.

Hi guys

The film will be released in the UK on April 21, not sure of the states.

Thank god Christian Bale got to play him in the end though.

My choice may have been one of the Baldwins, my sis Dot would have gone for a blond, like Brad Pit, gorgeous, but can be sick!

Anyone know what Bret has said about the constant references to Bale in Glamorama.

American Psycho has long been one of my favourite books - it is such an assault on the senses - dark, humorous and reviling - i think it is a masterpiece in every sense. Whenever i get the chance I lend it to people with the words - "this is the effect a truly great novel should have."

However, after seeing the movie last night i have come to the conclusion that capturing the true essence of the book on film is an impossible task. Like Stephen King's novella "Apt Pupil" this is destined to become a curiosity piece - well acted, competently filmed but ultimately a pepsi-lite version of the original.

Great films require great stories and the book American Psycho is a great literary experience NOT a great story. The themes, dialogue and subtext of American psycho exist on the page and do translate on to the screen.

You will cringe as the audience laugh at the wrong bits - as scenes are lost or amalgamated and when you overhear people's confusion and misinterpretations as they leave the cinema.

Christian Bale and the team have delivered an entertaining, well made film and remained as faithful to the book as possible - with some great set-pieces (the business card scene is brilliant) But this is not my American Psycho and i doubt whether it is the American Psycho of the vast members of people who visit this site. We can just rejoice in the fact that many people will see this film and then go and buy the book and join our elite and priveliged club!

Go see it and dissect it I will be interested to read the comments of others.

Go see it and dissect it and discuss it

OK, I've seen the movie and it's great! Bale was totally perfect as Bateman! One thing puzzeled me though: Paul Owen's name in the movie has been changed to Paul Allen for some reason, and I can't figure out why, since it's Owen in the script...

Someone asked about Jean and a nail gun. In the movie, Bateman has had dinner with Jean, and they end up in his appartment. While talking to each other about happiness and goals in life, she is sitting in his sofa while he is walking around in his kitchen looking at knives, then gets his nail gun and position himself behind her, still talking. She doesn't see him pointing the gun at the back of her head. Anyway, he can't pull the trigger and gets interrupted by the answering machine (Evelyn is calling). He says to Jean that she better go because he's afraid of hurting her.

It was a great movie, though I wish it had been longer. But since you cant fit in 399 pages in an hour and a half, I can see why they had to skip a lot of scenes from the book.

One great thing about the movie is that it captures the satire and the black humor in a way that is more obvious here than in the book. One thing that surprised me was that the film "7" with Brad Pitt was much more 'discusting' than American Psycho...

Saw the NC-17 version last night; compared to what the edited version is going to be (i.e. they're taking out one word, re-cutting one scene so you can't see a teeny something-or-other), there isn't much difference. Those who will see only the R version in theatres will not be missing anything at all.

We all now know that the MPAA made the choice to have the sex scene between Bateman and the hookers edited, right? Except that it is only in American that the change is being made. Here in Canada, the scene is going to be uncut and left the way it was filmed. I guess our MPAA is a little more open minded than our brothers to the South.

FROM SALON MAGAZINE:

Salon: Were you secretly smiling about the irony of the despicable character being named "Paul Allen" - the co-founder of Microsoft?

Harron: That was the worst thing that happened. They wouldn't let me use "Paul Owen."

Salon: Who is "they?"

Harron: The legal department of Lion's Gate. They said, "There's a Paul Owen in the New York phone book, and he won't give us permission to use his name." Which was ridiculous. So they gave me a list of names and I said, "Oh. Well, Allen sounds like Owen." I must have been the only person in the world who didn't know who Paul Allen was. And no one said, "Did you get permission to use that name?" And I was like, "It's too late, we already shot with it." That's horrible. I felt so bad.

the soundtrack info has been released and it looks to be a disappointment to those of us hoping for an all 80's cheesy pop score. the only song on the soundtrack even mentioned in the book is "Hip To Be Square" by Huey Lewis and The News...a lot of the soundtrack seems to be dialogue from the movie(which was quite effective for the Natural Born Killers soundtrack), so it may turn out positive..."pump up the volume", another 80's tune is also listed...but other than that, the soundtrack looks to be new songs and movie soundbytes...

3-Some = NC-17, Ratings Board Figures (IMDB studio brief Jan. 18)

The fascist MPAA ratings board has handed the film American Psycho an NC-17 rating NOT because of scenes of excessive violence, but because of a ménage à trois scene between star Christian Bale and two actresses, published reports said today (Tuesday). Director Mary Harron commented: "We were trying to make the scene as un-erotic as possible to underscore that these women were being paid for sex, which their facial expressions make clear. The scene is not about sex, but about sex as a transaction, so we made it deliberately banal and distant." Lions Gate, the Canadian film company that is distributing the film and plans to screen it at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday, said it will appeal the rating.

I am glad that the movie is finally done with post-production, at least according to the lengthy review of the prescreening given on this page. But isn't it just like people...giving a review of the movie AND THEN saying that they haven't read the book yet and someone else said it's horrible. According to the review, the movie seems about 95% faithful to the book and even seems to catch some of the possibly subtle details as well (shower scene, musical artist chapters) that might have been deleted from the final product. Now you know what type of people we'll have to put up with once the film is released. Spare us.

Liz Smith, Newsday Tuesday, June 22, 1999

CRITICS OF Bret Easton Ellis' controversial novel "American Psycho" can relax a little when the movie hits screens later this year. We hear the hideous tale of a serial killer has been cleaned up considerably - many excessively sadistic details concerning women have been excised, though, for sure, this still won't be a treat for sensitive types.

Christian Bale, who plays the American psycho, is said to be brilliant, frightening and terrifyingly charismatic.

I've seen the trailer for "American Psycho" which Lions Gate made for Cannes - very slick and impressive with Christian Bale very sleek and handsome as Bateman. Also glimpsed in the trailer are Willem Dafoe, Reese Witherspoon, Chloe Sveigny, Jared Leto and Samanta Mathis. The moody trailer ends with Bale as Bateman narration. Looks very impressive.

more info today from Cinescape.com - Christian Bale is hard at work in Toronto playing serial killer Patrick Bateman in the film version of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial book American Psycho. While talking to USA Today, the actor compared the shoot to something along the lines of a "war zone."

"A bit of an exaggeration," says Bale. "But it is the first film I've done where everything is untitled. My trailer doesn't have an American Psycho sign on, and that's so people walking down the street don't cause trouble."

So, what does he make of the various protests and opposition to the film? Bale says, "They don't know what film we're making; they haven't read the script and obviously haven't seen the film. It's like that quote by Groucho Marx, 'Whatever it is, I'm against it,' which is basically stupid."

Bale also reveals that the movie is different from the book. "You can't really explore the depths of violence that the book does and be able to release the film. The book is incredibly graphic, which is something we don't wish to do." He adds that the film "is in some ways very funny, a black comedy. But my character is a violent character. Do we show it in close-up? No, but you can't ignore it."

He claimed he was quite happy with it as about 95% of the screenplay is taken from the novel. However, he claimed that he was gonna be disappointed no matter how good a movie it was. So there.

some slight news today, from www.cinescape.com The Toronto Sun is reporting that shooting continues on the film version of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial book American Psycho. Given the protests over the film, the production has stayed low-key. The Sun reports that a scene for the film was shot in a Toronto eatery called Shark City wherein the lead character, Patrick Bateman, breaks up with his girlfriend. The employees of the restaurant were only told that the film being shot was "untitled."

As a film maker, I myself dreamed of making this film and all I can do is stand pat and await the results anxiously. In my opinion American Psycho was a landmark novel. Ellis is truly a Salinger of our lost generation. My fears exist in how they will convey the message that is portrayed with the novel. I am concerned about the film being labled as a horror film by the critics and therefore losing it's psychological impact that the novel so effortlessly flattens us with. I am hoping that Batemans character is portrayed with the same brutal coldness that we all envisioned within our heads upon first reading the novel. If there is anyone in direct contact with the production who would like to discuss the events as they unfold please feel free to conntact me.

Readers of the book will of course remember that Kimball is a minor character who Patrick fools completely. I truly hope they're not going to turn this into typical Hollywood drivel.

Filming of American Psycho is beginning in a few days and it has raised some controversy in Toronto, due mainly to the fact that it was the bedtime reading of a local psycho killer of teenaged women, Paul Bernardo. You may be interested in putting some of the controversy on your page. Too bad Brad Pitt turned it down, so the budget was halved. At www.canoe.ca there are about four articles interviewing both the watered-down pleas of the film maker and the protests form organizations, and mother of victim of Bernardo. (The Toronto sun is the local right-wing paper which champions its page 3 Sunshine Girl.) There is only one article in the liberal paper the star, www.thestar.com.

The film is shooting in toronto right about next week. Many activist groups in Toronto have tried to ban filming of the movie, as the book (described as a how-to of rape and murder) was being read by Canadian serial killer Paul Bernardo (pretty famous here in canada, he raped and brutally murdered two teen girls, Kirsten French and Leslie Mahaffey, just out of Toronto). So you can understand why many groups, including the parents of the teens who were killed. I think Toronto council is still letting production film though, so we'll wait and see. Anyways, here's some info I found on www.cinescape.com which is a great movie site. ". According to the Hollywood Reporter, Reese Witherspoon (Pleasantville) and Samantha Mathis (Broken Arrow, Pump of the Volume) have joined the Mary Harron helmed production. The two will be joining previously cast Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Chloe Sevigny and Guinevere Turner, who co-wrote the script with Harron."

Old News:

"American Psycho", a novel women's groups labeled as misogynistic in 1990, is being made into a move directed by a woman. Mary Harron, who co-wrote and directed "I Shot Andy Warhol", will be in charge.

"It was misjudged. The violence is so extreme they couldn't see anything else," says Harron, who had to put the book down for a month when it got too graphic and will scale back the violence by three quarters. "It's a great black satire of the '80s."
